Avian Beauty is a personal project to share my love of all things birding.

When I was very young, my father gave me a bird identification book. It’s the only gift he ever gave me, and while he didn’t offer it with any particular meaning, it was the only way I had to identify with him.

Little did either of us know how much that book would impact my life. Like all young American boys who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, I was obsessed with anything that could fly. Birds were my first introduction to the concept of leaving earth’s bounds by wing. From that moment, I was hooked.

“Imagine that!” I remember telling my friends, who frankly, were perplexed at my new hobby. “Beautiful, winged, creatures who could go anywhere they want, simply relying on the wind and their wings.”

For a boy who felt trapped in a loveless home, it was the only respite I could find. Looking back, even though my father most likely gave me that book just to shut me up, he did me a huge favor. He opened up a new world to me that would inform the rest of my life—and for that I am grateful.

I hope, as artfully as I am able, to speak to you on behalf of the birds. And I hope to inspire you to want to learn more about them and love them as I do. Maybe you’ll feel a moment of joy along the way.

If you want to know more about me, here it is in a nutshell. I am a professional bird photographer, author, and lecturer. I am an Olympus Visionary. And while I am primarily known as a photographer, I consider myself an ornithologist first, and a photographer second. My particular field of expertise is in raptors, more precisely, bald eagles.

But I love ALL birds. Even the lowly crow! If it has wings, I dig it. And that makes me a very lucky guy. I found my passion in life. That is a great gift. And what comes with it? I get to travel the world taking pictures of birds, teaching and speaking about birds, and having my work published in books and magazines spanning two continents. I host a podcast about birds and have even appeared on a few television shows.
